Australia and Vietnam Celebrate 50 Years of Partnership in Research and Education
Australia Vietnam Innovation Symposium Marks Milestone Anniversary
Sydney, 7 September 2023 — In a remarkable testament to five decades of collaborative research and education, the Australia Vietnam Innovation Symposium was held on 29 August. The event marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Australia and Vietnam, and brought together over 160 experts from the government, industry, and academia to address shared challenges and opportunities for partnership.
Strengthening Ties
Co-hosted by the University of Sydney and the Consulate-General of Vietnam, the Symposium aimed at strengthening the educational and research cooperation between the two nations. The discussions were chaired by Professor Greg Fox, Director of the Sydney Vietnam Academic Network, and delved into key sectors such as research, science and technology, economic partnership, and trade.
A Lasting Friendship
In his opening remarks, Professor Mark Scott AO, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Sydney, emphasized the importance of the long-standing friendship between Australia and Vietnam. He said, "The enduring friendship between our nations is evident for us at the University of Sydney with our Vietnamese students, who are part of our strong international cohort."
Professor Scott also highlighted the contributions of Vietnamese alumni who have engaged significantly with government and industry both in Vietnam and Australia. He expressed pride in the role the University of Sydney has played in fostering this bilateral relationship over the last 50 years.
Focused on Innovation
Vietnam's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Bui Thanh Son, contributed a recorded message emphasizing the significance of scientific and technological innovation in bilateral partnerships. The Minister stated that the priority for Vietnam is building an economy based on science, technology, and innovation.
Commitment to Sustainability
NSW Minister for Industry and Trade, and Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, the Hon. Anoulack Chanthivong, an alumnus of the University of Sydney, also spoke at the event. He emphasized the NSW government's commitment to innovation and sustainable development. Minister Chanthivong said, “Technology and innovation are at the heart of attracting significant global investment to NSW and pivotal to shaping our future industries.”
Milestones and the Road Ahead
University of Sydney Vice President (External Engagement), Kirsten Andrews, outlined the history of educational ties between the two countries, stating that since 1974, more than 80,000 Vietnamese students have pursued education in Australia. The partnerships cover a range of fields, from infectious diseases and agriculture to business and innovation.
In his closing address, Ambassador of Vietnam to Australia, Mr. Nguyen Tat Thanh, affirmed that Australia is Vietnam’s partner of choice, particularly in the areas of science and technology. He stated, “Outcomes of events like this will contribute to better cooperation between the two countries in the next 50 years and beyond.”
