Forestry and Logging Workers (ANZSCO 8431) perform a variety of tasks related to the cultivation and maintenance of natural and plantation forests, as well as the logging, felling, and sawing of trees. It is important to note that Tree Surgeons are not included in this occupation group and are instead classified under Unit Group 3625 Arboriculture Workers, in Occupation 362512 Tree Worker.

Indicative Skill Level:

The skill level required for most occupations in this unit group is commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.

In Australia:

  • AQF Certificate II or III (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

In New Zealand:

  • NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

In some cases, one year of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. Additionally, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may also be necessary for certain positions.

Tasks Include:

  • Maintaining forest roads, buildings, facilities, signs, and equipment
  • Killing weeds, felling and de-barking non-productive trees, and thinning young plantations
  • Collecting seeds, cultivating and planting seedlings for reafforestation purposes
  • Applying fertilizers and pesticides to individual trees and general forest areas
  • Maintaining a lookout for fires in forests
  • Removing major branches and tree tops, trimming branches, and sawing trunks into logs
  • Assisting with loading and transporting logs
  • Planning the felling of trees and determining the natural and intended fall of each tree
  • Clearing the surrounding area of saplings and debris prior to tree-felling
  • Operating and maintaining manual and machine saws to fell trees and cut them into logs
