Taylor Swift Fanposium at RMIT: A Deep Dive into Pop Culture

Melbourne, Australia – RMIT University has announced an exciting event for Taylor Swift enthusiasts, a 'Fanposium' set to take place on Sunday, 11th February, at the iconic Capitol Theatre in Melbourne. This complimentary event is part of a series of Taylor Swift-focused events leading up to the superstar's Eras tour concerts in Melbourne.

The Fanposium aims to dive deep into the Taylor Swift phenomenon, featuring discussions led by prominent music and culture experts, including Dr. Catherine Strong from RMIT, Dr. Liz Giuffre from UTS, and noted music writer Cameron Adams. They will explore Swift's enduring impact on music and popular culture, complemented by the first Australian public screening of the "Miss Americana" documentary.

The event is a precursor to the Swiftposium, a three-day academic conference at the University of Melbourne, which has garnered over 400 submissions from enthusiasts eager to discuss the cultural and musical impact of the global pop icon.

Kate Pattison, a leading fan studies expert at RMIT University and one of the few individuals globally pursuing a PhD focused on Taylor Swift, will host the panel discussion. Her research underscores the positive implications of pop music fandoms in various life aspects, emphasizing a shift from the perception of fans as merely hysterical to their recognition as influential cultural contributors.

"This Fanposium will kick off a week-long carnival of Taylor Swift events," said Professor Lisa Given, Director of RMIT’s Social Change Enabling Impact Platform. "It's a unique opportunity for fans and scholars alike to engage with leading experts and delve into the multifaceted world of Taylor Swift, whose influence transcends music."

The event, which is a collaboration between RMIT University and the University of Melbourne, celebrates the power of fandom and the scholarly interest in Taylor Swift's work, offering insights into the singer's legacy and the broader implications of her music and public persona.

Attendees are encouraged to secure their free tickets starting Monday, 8th January, due to limited capacity. This is a rare opportunity for scholars, fans, and the public to engage in a meaningful discussion about one of the most influential artists of our time, right in the heart of Melbourne.
