Resignation of University of Canberra's Vice-Chancellor and President

The University of Canberra's Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Paddy Nixon, has officially resigned citing personal reasons. During his tenure, he led the university through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and launched the ambitious decadal strategy 'Connected'. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the university's history.

 

The University of Canberra has officially announced the resignation of its Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Paddy Nixon, effective immediately. Professor Nixon, who has led the university since April 2020, has stepped down citing personal reasons for taking a career break.

During his tenure, Professor Nixon navigated the University of Canberra through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on job security and student learning continuity. Under his leadership, the university launched the ambitious decadal strategy 'Connected', aiming to elevate the institution's excellence through enhanced student success, impactful research, and strong staff support.

Ms. Lisa Paul AO PSM, the Chancellor of the University of Canberra, lauded Professor Nixon's contributions, particularly in steering the university during the difficult pandemic years. She highlighted the significant progress the university has made under his guidance, including being recognized globally for its efforts in reducing inequalities and its commitment to advancing First Nations Peoples.

Reflecting on his tenure, Professor Nixon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the university and acknowledged the collective efforts of the leadership team and staff in achieving the university's goals. He also extended his thanks to the University Council for its support and commitment to the university's values and mission.

In the interim, Professor Lucy Johnston, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise, will assume the role of Interim Vice-Chancellor and President. The University of Canberra will commence a global search to find a suitable replacement for the Vice-Chancellor and President position.

Professor Nixon's departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the University of Canberra's history. His leadership and dedication to the university's mission have set a strong foundation for its future growth and continued success.
